Interview by Motherhood Magazine (Feb 2014 Issue)

Note from Kay: This is my favourite write-up about Milky Way because I appreciate how the article reflects   not just my journey as an entrepreneur, but more so as a wife and mum. Thank you, Motherhood magazine!

Made with love in Singapore

Hello mommies!

You might have noticed that we’ve added a new category “SG Made” to our menu. From day one, the original collection of 16 Milky Way styles were made by a group of ladies right here in Singapore.

Is sustainability something that is important to you? We care about it too. Our fabrics are sourced from fabric merchants in Singapore where overstocked fabrics from major international brands are sold. Otherwise, they are bought off small textile retailers, most of whom have been in the trade for a very long time.

With our locally sourced materials, we work with a small local garment manufacturer to translate our designs into final products that mummies love. We are very blessed to be working alongside this same manufacturer since we started the business in 2005.

Being close to our manufacturer means that we get to pop by whenever we needed, to discuss design and production issues. Because everything is made in small quantities, we were able to stay nimble to refine the styles over cycles of testing and production.

Not all of Milky Way pieces are made locally; the comparatively large quantities of certain styles means that we sometimes have to look beyond our shores for trusted manufacturers.

If you’ll like to support local enterprises If you are as passionate about supporting local enterprises as we are, do shop the styles here: SG Made and proud of it!

Photoshoot - Feb 2010

When Agnes, our model, did our first photoshoot a year ago, she was barely in her first trimester of her second pregnancy. At that time, we did not know that it would be a boy, and that he would be called Toby.

Fast forward a year later.

We meet up once again for our second photoshoot, this time with 4-month-old Toby joining us in the photoshoot, together with his elder sister Sophie.

Runaway Boy

For the longest time, we've been working with a fashion dummy for displaying Milky Way pieces, so it was with more than a twinge of excitement that we planned for our first ever outdoor photoshoot.

While we were mentally prepared for the various logistical issues that were par for the course, a runaway toddler definitely stretched the limits of what was expected.

The tot in question was my son David who was 15 months old then.  He just kept practicing his newfound skill of walking. And so he kept walking away. And away again. Loitering everywhere except where we needed him to be.

Though not a mummy (yet) herself, Shennon sure shows the qualities of a patient and resourceful mummy dealing with a tot that kept running away!

He just kept walking away! It was a good thing David didn't tip over, because right beyond the edge is the deep blue waters of the marina. Looking back, I shudder at the thought of what could have happened.

Picking him up didn't help either.

In the end, there were plenty of photos taken that captured the little boy playing around but not many that could be used for the actual website itself. Ah well.

Photoshoot for New Collection 2012

Photoshoot May 2012

Mummies unite! The last photoshoot of 2012 --- featuring pieces from our year end collection --- brought together a team comprising entirely of mothers. Our model Izabella was just two weeks away from the expected date of delivery and amazed us with her remarkable energy and poise. The ladies exchanged tips on break feeding and baby care during breaks. Here's one bub we're looking forward to meeting in days to come!

Milky Way Flashback

Just for the fun of it, here is our very first Milky Way homepage when it was launched in early 2005. The mummy featured in the main picture is my university hostel mate J, with baby S in her arms. Today, J is the mummy of three beautiful girls.

We started off displaying our clothings on a fashion dummy. Though old and slightly yellowed, the dummy is still serving Milky Way well, as our go-to-gal for all sample fittings.

The logo was designed by my best friend's husband B, who did it for Milky Way for free.

Milky Way's Tenth Anniversary Celebration

Milky Way turns 10! We’ve come a long way from our original incarnation, with 16 core styles, and working out from a home office. The one element that’s been constant through this decade is the same thing we’ve been immensely grateful for. The support of our community -- family, friends, customers-turned-friends, work associates-turned-friends --- has been precious. We thank you all for navigating the ups, downs and curveballs throughout this decade with us.

To mark the occasion, we threw a party on a balmy evening for family and friends on the 4th of September. The dusk sky set aglow with fairy lights (big shout out to the captain and crew of Megaway 128) provided the magical backdrop to an evening of merriment and conviviality. Thank you for sharing in this occasion and celebrating with us --- as shown in these images --- it was an unforgettable one.

Photoshoot with Baby in Tow

We were reunited with the lovely Izabella for our CNY collection photoshoot. This time round, the shoot was even more special because we were joined by Izzy's adorable six-month-old baby. Modelling our range of toddler outfits, Euphorie was a superstar in front of the camera lens.

To those of our readers who celebrate it, Gong Hei Fatt Choy!

Wishing you peace and prosperity to you and your loved ones in the year of the snake.
